Three papers in the Advanced Online Publication section of Nature Genetics report the discovery of loci connected to the increased risk of prostate cancer.
This is a common first step on the road to decipher the molecular mechanism of a disease. Now, we know in which neighborhoods of the genome the prostate cancer related genes are situated. Of course we are still talking about a large chunk of DNA, that contains multiple genes. Next, the scientists will pick candidate genes in these areas and start to study them in prostate cancer models to prove the connection at a molecular level.
